I Need // 2020

Deecvnt is an up and coming British R&B talent. He makes powerful tracks, laced with gorgeous light falsettos, dynamic vocals and warm, crisp instrumentals. He has been gradually building up to his first planned large release, dropping gems along the way. We asked a few questions to find out more about the person behind the sounds.

Who are you?

My name’s Darnell and I’m a singer-songwriter born and raised in Croydon, London but currently located in Dartford, Kent.

What are your influences?

Growing up I was heavily influenced by many Neo-Soul and Jazz artists, my main influences are Erykah Badu, Lalah Hathaway, D’angelo and Marsha Ambrosius.

What do you have planned for the future?

I’m currently finishing off my studies at The Academy of Contemporary Music based in Clapham Common and my goal is to complete my studies before releasing any big major projects. I graduate in 2022 and I plan on hopefully releasing my long-awaited EP shortly after, as of now I will release little gems throughout the year to keep everyone on their toes!

What is your work process like?:

Oh boy, my work process is incredibly hectic and spontaneous [laughs]. I will always have a listen to my ‘Chill’ playlist on Spotify and occasionally have a smoke to help get the creative juices going! It is mandatory for me to start with a drum pattern first before adding any other surrounding instrumentation.

How has lockdown affected your work?

Lockdown has made me less creative, I never really believed in “writer’s block” until we went into lockdown, I was struggling mentally and emotionally and I really pushed myself beyond my limits. There were days I could create but I couldn’t commit and I’m still going through it, I just have to remind myself that I’m not the only individual feeling this way and this is only temporary.
